Stardock ObjectDock

Ever used a Mac? The taskbar equivalent – known as “dock” is both attractive and functional, and while Windows 7 improves things significantly with its own enhanced taskbar, it’s still something that won’t turn heads. The good news is that you can easily augment – or even ditch – the Windows taskbar and replace it with something more akin to what you find on Apple Macs.
Stardock’s ObjectDock comes in both free and paid-for flavours. This free version has all the basic functionality you need, displaying both currently running programs (a la the Windows 7 taskbar) as well as your favourite shortcuts – currently running programs can be displayed as icons or a thumbnail of the program window. As you roll the mouse over the bar, individual icons leap to the fore, making them easy to select.
The bar can be placed at on any of the four sides of the screen, but there’s one major omission: the lack of a system tray, which could be a deal-breaker unless you’re happy to leave the taskbar in place (or you don’t mind paying $20 for the paid-for version).
The new ObjectDock v2.1 now ships with a new UI, folders within your dock and Windows 8 support.
Verdict:
Reasonable implementation of the Mac’s wonderful dock, but the lack of system tray support in the free version could be a major stumbling block.
